A 48-year-old Canadian man pleaded guilty in Vermont for his role in smuggling a Vietnamese person across the border.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Neal Laforme, a dual U.S.-Canadian citizen who lives in Ontario, pleaded guilty Friday in U.S. District Court in Burlington to conspiring to smuggle an illegal immigrant into the country.

In his plea, Laforme admitted he offered to pay another $2,000 to bring a Vietnamese national into Vermont. Two other men and the Vietnamese national were arrested in April 2006 close to the border near Richford.

Laforme was sentenced to time served. According to the Burlington Free Press, he has spent about 21 months in jail, much of that time in Canada while fighting extradition to the United States.
