Calf Stolen From Brighton Farmer

Police in the Northeast Kingdom are still looking for a thief who made off with a calf from a Brighton barn last month.

Marilyn Maxwell reported that she saw a vehicle drive up to the barn around midnight, and the next day her husband realized that the 300-pound bull calf was missing.

State Trooper Amy Borsari knows of at least two other similar thefts over the past year.

But she’s not sure yet if the cases are related. She says young calves can be valuable.

"I guess if it’s a quick in and out and then you can go and re-sell the calf to someone, I guess it can be a profitable endeavor," Borsari said.

In one case, a stolen calf that was sold was stolen again from that new owner after news broke about the crime.

Borsari says farmers should be cautious about the sellers they deal with, and report anything suspicious to their local police.

She says livestock theft is not an everyday problem but happens more than people think.
