A Northeast Kingdom wind power company isn’t generating any electricity yet, but it has a big customer.

The Burlington Electric Department has reached an agreement to buy 40 percent of the power produced by Vermont Wind LLC.

Under a 10-year agreement, power from the 40-megawatt Sheffield wind project will be provided at a fixed price.

Vermont Wind is planning to build 16, 420-foot tall wind turbines. The company is still seeking a stormwater permit for the project before construction can begin.

Burlington Electric General Manager Barbara Grimes says the utility hopes to have 100 percent renewable power within the next four years. She says stably priced, green power produced locally is good for the economy and the environment.
