Burlington to pay in wastewater settlement

The city of Burlington is going to pay $8,500 after 900,000 gallons of wastewater that had not been disinfected was released into Lake Champlain last summer.

The incident occurred on July 26th last year when a chlorine tank used to disinfect wastewater ran dry.

The Vermont Agency of Natural Resources says chlorine was available in other tanks, but an operator failed to switch tanks.

The settlement approved by the Environmental Court will have the city pay $7,500 for a supplemental environmental project and pay the state $1,000 in costs.

An independent consultant will also review operations at all Burlington wastewater facilities.
