Burlington cable to keep Al-Jazeera

Burlington has signed a contract to continue broadcasting the English-language programming of Al-Jazeera on the city-owned cable television system.

Some say the Qatar-based network is too sympathetic to radical Islamic groups.

Burlington Telecom had decided to drop the Arab-owned network, but Mayor Bob Kiss asked officials to delay pulling the channel until hearing from city residents.

After public hearings on the issues, two committees that oversee Burlington Telecom recommended that it continue to broadcast the network.

The oversight committees said members oppose hateful speech, but they have seen no evidence from "respected sources" that Al-Jazeera English supports terrorism.
