Police are vowing to step up efforts to hold unsafe drivers responsible after two hit-and-run accidents in which cars struck bicyclists in as many days in Burlington and South Burlington.

Burlington Police Chief Mike Schirling says police hope by spring to have a program up and running that will encourage cyclists to report aggressive drivers. Police will then respond by calling the drivers and telling them to be more careful.

The chief’s comments came Tuesday, as bicyclists and advocates gathered in City Hall Park for a rally to demand better sharing of Vermont’s roads between cyclists and motorists.

Participants said both cyclists and motorists have a duty to respect one another.
