Bruegger’s Enterprises, a Burlington-based bagel store chain, has been purchased by Le Duff America, the North American subsidiary of the French firm Group Le Duff SA.

The terms of the sale were not released.

Bruegger’s started in Burlington in 1983. It now has bagel stores in 26 states, the District of Columbia and several Canadian provinces.

In 2003, the company was acquired by Sun Capital Partners, a private investment firm. Since then, it has increased sales by 76 percent and become the second largest chain of bakery cafes in the country.

The Burlington Free Press reports that the purchase of Bruegger’s makes Le Duff the second largest company in the cafe-bakery sector in the world, with sales of more than $1.5 billion.
