A Bridport man accused of accidentally wounding his neighbor while target shooting has pleaded not guilty to reckless endangerment and simple assault charges.

Thirty-six year-old Tracy Stone was arraigned Monday in the shooting last August that critically injured Peter Damone.

The 77-year-old Damone attended the arraignment, and said Stone used poor judgment and must be held accountable. But Damone said he doesn’t want Stone to to go to jail and has forgiven him.

Police say one of the bullets traveled four- tenths of a mile and hit Damone in the face while he sat on his back porch. Stone said he had problems with the gun and had been drinking beer before target shooting

WCAX-TV says if he’s convicted of reckless endangerment, he faces up to five years in prison.
