Author David Macaulay says that buildings that have lasted for centuries an tell us a lot about the time and the society in which they were created.  With his latest book, "Built to Last," he hopes to get people thinking and asking questions.

Speaking on Vermont Edition, he told host Jane Lindholm that the goal is to get people to think about why things happen and to ask questions.  Why do buildings look the way they do? What were the limitations of construction? What were the possibilities? What were the requirements? What were these people thinking?

Macaulay says these ancient buildings reveal many of the reasons they were created, and that you have to really look at them and spend some time with them.
