An autopsy is scheduled for this morning on the body of a man pulled from the Otter Creek in Middlebury that police believe is that of missing Middlebury College student Nicholas Garza.

Police Chief Tom Hanley says the badly-decomposed remains of a male were found in the river late yesterday as authorities prepared for a large-scale search this weekend. The body was pulled from the river just below a waterfalls about 8:30 p.m.

His mother, Natalie Garza, was present at the time.

Authorities hope to identify the body at an autopsy set for this morning at the chief medical examiner’s office in Burlington.

The 19-year-old Middlebury freshman from Albuquerque, N.M., vanished nearly four months ago after leaving a dormitory on campus during a semester break. He was never heard from again.
