The Vermont state Board of Education has approved a proposal to merge seven school boards into one in the Chittenden East Supervisory Union.

The consolidation plan must be approved by each town in the district to move forward. The issue will go before voters in those towns – Bolton, Huntington, Jericho, Richmond and Underhill – in June.

The plan would consolidate the seven school boards with 45 members into one 15-member board. Underhill ID school board chairman Robert Letovsky who is a member of the consolidation study committee, says the unification plan is estimated to save $300,000 and $400,000 a year as schools grapple with dropping enrollment and increased energy and transportation costs.

The Burlington Free Press says if approved, the plan would go into effect July 1, 2012.
