(Host) Black River Produce in Proctorsville has won state backing to buy the former Idlenot dairy plant in Springfield. The Vermont Economic Development Authority has given a $648,000 loan to the project – about 40 percent of the total project cost.

If the purchase goes through, the company’s wholesale operations, including produce, seafood and flowers, will move to the North Springfield plant. Mark Curran, one of the owners of Black River Produce, says there is work to do to get the empty facility up and running:

(Curran) “And when the deal goers through, there’s a bit of reconstruction to be done down there. The main thing is putting refrigeration in, and that’ll probably take us about four or five months before we can actually use the building.”

(Host) Curran says the company had hoped to complete the purchase of the Idlenot plant by the beginning of July, but that it’s not likely that deadline will be met. He says the purchase of the new facility in Springfield won’t affect the company’s retail store in Proctorsville.
