Bill Calls For Regulation Of Salvage Yards

Nearly three-quarters of the salvage yards in Vermont are operating without state licenses or effective regulation.

That’s according to both an environmental group and the commissioner of the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Jessica Edgerly of Toxics Action Center joined Justin Johnson of the DEC yesterday to urge passage of legislation calling for the regulation of salvage yards.

The bill calls for fees to be imposed on salvage yard operators and sets up rules for the proper handling of junk cars and similar materials. The concern is that gasoline, motor oil and other chemicals from junkyards might pollute the environment.

A bill on the subject has passed the Vermont Senate and is awaiting action in the House.
