Bennington schools make plans to raise test scores

The middle and high schools in Bennington have been given two weeks by Vermont’s education commissioner to figure out how to raise student test scores. Principals of the Mount Anthony Union middle and high schools met with Education Commissioner Richard Cate via a telephone conference call on Monday. The schools were the only two in the state to receive corrective actions, a result of not making adequate academic yearly progress for more than four years.

Changing class scheduling for the spring semester is one of the first goals at the high school. The high school will offer more core curriculum classes, such as math and English, to students testing below the state standard.

The middle school plans to refocus on the language arts program, emphasizing reading analysis and interpretation over writing.
