Bennington officials say a new Wal-Mart store would require ten million dollars in highway upgrades to avoid traffic problems. Officials say the traffic on Northside Drive is already congested.

Town Planning Director, Daniel Monks, says there’s no indication where the money for the roadwork would come from. Monks says it would be more than just construction. A number of rights of way would have to be acquired, and the area is some of the highest priced property in Bennington.

Monks says town officials want growth to promote growth in the area, but they want to make sure the cost is paid by developers.
