The Southwestern Vermont Medical Center is Bennington will be cutting staff to avoid going over budget.

Hospital officials say they plan to save $640,000 by cutting positions in the emergency department, medical surgical units, operating room and other areas.

It’s unclear how many people would lose their jobs.

A letter to employees says the hospital hired more nurses than needed with the expectation that other nurses would leave. But the expected attrition never materialized.

Officials say the cuts will not reduce the work force beyond what they consider to be acceptable levels.

And officials say the hospital will continue to recruit physicians.
