Bennington hospital aggressively recruits doctors

The Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington is erasing a shortage of physicians in the community.

Over the past year the hospital has recruited 17 doctors.

Hospital officials credit their in-house recruiting system, which includes a full-time recruiter and a Web site.

Hospital Medicine Chief Dr. Mark Novotny says most of the new doctors are just out of training, but a number of established physicians are now working in the area as well.

Novotny says Bennington can’t offer as much pay as other areas, but officials emphasize the practice and community environment.

The hospital is still trying to recruit 14 doctors.
