Vermont lawmakers are still looking for ways to cut costs. Two legislative committees will meet this week to grapple with the state’s ongoing budget problems.

On Monday, the Joint Government Accountability Committee will hear from House Speaker Shap Smith and from Douglas administration officials on efforts to find new efficiencies in state government using computer technology and new management strategies.

Smith is hoping the panel can find $30 million in savings.

On Thursday, the Joint Fiscal Committee will hear from administration officials on how they hope to achieve more than $13 million in labor costs for the state work force. That target was set in the state budget that lawmakers passed over Governor Jim Douglas’ veto.
