Skiers looking to try something different than the resort experience are drawn to the backcountry. Writer David Goodman says the quiet, the beauty and the isolation are the payoffs for going backcountry.

While we’ve seen a number of skiers in need of rescue recently, Goodman says these are primarily resort skiers going into the "side country" who don’t bring the necessary savvy or equipment to ski there. Backcountry Magazine Publisher Jon Howard urges that the use of common sense can’t be overstated or overemphasized.
