Bartonsville Bridge Rebuild Underway

A new covered bridge across the Williams River is taking shape next to where its 141-year-old predecessor was swept away in Tropical Storm Irene.

The bridge is in the Bartonsville section of Rockingham.

A work crew is putting the bridge together using methods that would be recognizable to the 19th Century engineers who built the first span, even if they didn’t have the power tools in use now.

Last week workers began assembling the beams that make up the walls of the bridge, holding them together with giant wooden pegs driven into holes bored with augers.

When it’s ready, the adjacent temporary bridge will be removed and the new covered bridge will be lifted into place. It should be ready for traffic early next year.
