Barre Homeless Shelter Overflows In Cold Weather

The winter’s first stretch of frigid weather is filling Central Vermont’s only homeless shelter to capacity and beyond.

The 20-bed Good Samaritan Haven in Barre is housing its overflow at the Hedding United Methodist Church.

Hedding Pastor, the Rev. Ralph Howe, tells the Barre Times Argus the shelter and the church are in dire need of volunteers to oversee the homeless clientele.

Howe says the Haven expects to need five to 20 additional beds at an offsite building.

He says officials are looking for another location for the homeless.

Howe says homelessness is a community-wide problem that demands a community-wide solution.
