Barre firefighters push for photoelectric smoke detectors

Barre firefighters have been urging lawmakers to pass a requirement for photoelectric smoke detectors, rather than the much more common — and cheaper — ionization smoke detectors.

The Barre firefighters took up the issue after responding to a fire two years ago in which a young mother and four children died.

An official from Underwriters Laboratory took tough questioning by the Senate Economic Development Committee, which is looking into concerns that the smoke detectors used in most American homes react slowly to smoldering fires.

An official from UL says his nonprofit testing firm moves carefully before issuing new requirements for products seeking the UL stamp of approval.
