Barre City Considers Truck Detour

As Barre’s "Big Dig" wraps up, city officials are asking the public whether large trucks should be banned from Main Street.

The street has been rebuilt over the past two years and the city’s contractor reopened it to full traffic Tuesday.

The street is also US Route 302, and some in the city would like trucks to continue following the detour that’s been in place during construction to reduce congestion and disruption.

The Agency of Transportation says a truck route would be acceptable for a trial period, but the agency says written notice would need to be provided.

Mayor Thom Lauzon says he expects the estimated $18 million dollar federal highway project to be complete this fall.
