Barn fire decimates dairy herd

A dairy farmer is taking stock of his losses after a barn fire killed almost all the cows in his herd. All but a few of Gerard Brasseur’s 72 cows died in the blaze Sunday morning. Fire officials say the animals that are alive are suffering from serious smoke inhalation.

The barn’s roof collapsed shortly after firefighters arrived at three o’clock in the morning. It took several hours to put out the blaze. No people were injured in the fire, and a nearby house was untouched.
