Bank Of America Error Leads To Delinquent Tax Payments

An errant escrow payment from the nation’s largest mortgage company to the small Vermont town of Alburgh has resulted in 25 property owners being declared delinquent on their property taxes.

Town Clerk Carol Cleland says she sent back the erroneous check to Bank of America last October and asked that the bank forward the correct amount. She says it never did, and the taxpayers were declared delinquent last month.

A Bank of America spokesperson says a company that manages 14 million mortgages sometimes makes mistakes and tries to fix them when it discovers the mistake.

Alburgh resident Ray Bohannon says he’s not impressed with that explanation. He says he manages to pay his bills, and Bank of America ought to do the same with its own.
