Vermont state Auditor Tom Salmon says Vermont schools need to do a better job managing how they spend money when buying school supplies.

Salmon’s office has issued a report saying schools could be saving money by using a state contracting Web site in purchasing the supplies, but only about a fifth are doing so. He estimates schools in Vermont spend $60 million a year on janitorial, computer and other types of supplies.

Salmon says schools should be using the state Department of Buildings and General Services purchasing system, which has competitively bid contracts covering 400 commodities.
