The town of Hardwick, Vermont has had its share of ups and downs. At the turn of the 20th century, the Northeast Kingdom town rode the granite boom, but by about 1920 when steel became cheaper for construction, granite production slowed, and so did Hardwick. The town gained a rough reputation, and jokes at Hardwick’s expense became commonplace. But within the last decade a number of food-related industries have helped bring the town back economically. VPR’s Sarah Ashworth paid a visit to Hardwick and has this audio postcard.
