The use of all-terrain vehicles on state-owned land is up for a hearing before a panel of Vermont lawmakers.

The Legislature’s Administrative Rules Committee is set Tuesday to hear about the Agency of Natural Resources’ plan to allow limited use of ATVs on public land.

The rule has drawn fire from environmentalists, who worry about noise, damage to wetlands, pollution and other negative effects from ATVs.

An ATV riders’ group says allowing the machines on state land will encourage legal and responsible use of ATVs.

The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Statehouse.
