Assault Charges Dropped Against Former Trooper

Prosecutors say they’ve dropped domestic assault charges against a former Vermont State Police trooper because the key witness was a 4-year-old, and they didn’t want to make her testify in court.

Timothy Newton, of Sandgate, resigned from the state police in March after investigators said he punched his girlfriend in the nose. She claimed she fell and hurt herself.

Police say the 4-year-old told them her mother was assaulted.

Newton was charged following an off-duty incident on Feb. 6 following a Super Bowl party.
