Preliminary numbers show the amount of deer taken during Vermont’s archery season increased from past years, which Fish and Wildlife officials say is good news for hunters for the upcoming rifle season.

The tally shows 1,935 deer were killed during the three-week season, which ended Oct. 26, compared to the past three-year average of 1,362.

Officials say the numbers indicate that the state’s deer population is growing.

The data does not include deer reported days or weeks after the season ended, so they could change.

The upcoming rifle season starts Nov. 15.
