(Host) A Vermont soldier killed in Iraq was laid to rest today in his home town of Richmond. 21-year-old Adam Muller died last week when the vehicle he was in was struck by a roadside bomb.

VPR’s Steve Zind reports.

(Zind) Hundreds of people hurried through a pelting rain and into the Richmond Congregational Church to remember the fallen soldier.

Many were former classmates of Muller, who was a 2004 graduate of Mount Mansfield Union High School. Others were Vermonters who simply wanted to pay tribute.

A number of friends and family members spoke at the service. They told anecdotes that portrayed Muller as funny, mischievous and above all someone with an unusual ability to connect with people.

Michelle, Muller’s wife of one year, read excerpts from letters she’d received from soldiers who served with her husband in Iraq. One of them recalled the Army private’s `‘thousand megawatt smile."

A series of photographs at the front of the church traced Muller’s life from childhood to a young Army enlistee.

In his senior year, Muller was a member of his high school chorus. The group performed several selections at the service.

Muller’s family has established a fund in his name to distribute toys and school supplies to children in Iraq.

Muller was the 25th soldier with ties to Vermont to die in Iraq. Another Vermont serviceman was killed in Afghanistan and one soldier died of natural causes while stationed in Kuwait. For VPR News, I’m Steve Zind.
