The anniversary of the Bennington Battle will be marked with a full day of activities this weekend at the monument in Bennington.

Sunday is Bennington Battle Day; all state historic sites will be free to the public.

The Bennington Battle Monument will host a 5K race on Saturday, starting with canon fire at 9:30 in the morning.

Throughout the weekend war re-enactors will perform military drills, musket demonstrations, and fife and drum music.

The monument is Vermont’s tallest manmade structure. It was built to commemorate the Battle of Bennington in 1777, even though the battle occurred in nearby New York. In it, General John Stark and colonial troops fought British troops to protect military supplies stored in Bennington.
