Burlington voters won’t be casting ballots next month on an initiative to have the English-language broadcast of Al-Jazeera removed from the city cable television system.
Earlier this year the Defenders Council of Vermont tried to get the station removed from the cable lineup because members argued Al-Jazeera English is anti-American and shouldn’t be carried by publicly owned Burlington Telecom.
But Burlington Telecom’s two advisory committees unanimously recommended that the station stay on the network.
After that members vowed a petition drive to take the issue directly to voters.
But city officials say the group missed the September 25th deadline for ballot items.
