Officials with the Vermont Air National Guard say they’re not sure how much noisier a new fighter jet that could be based in South Burlington is compared with the planes there now.

But Guard leaders say if the Burlington International Airport is chosen is a location for the next generation F-35 fighter the guard will work to keep noise levels down.

Air Guard officials met Thursday with civic leaders in the Burlington area to discuss the proposal.

The new planes are said to be louder than the F-16s they would replace.

The Air Force is considering Burlington as one of a number of locations across the country to house the F-35.

The Air Force is expected to decide where to base the F-35s late next year.
