Three federal agencies want to review a proposal by Verizon Wireless to take over the Vermont business of rival Unicel.

The Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice and FBI, want the FCC to give them more time to review the proposed cellular merger for its national security, law enforcement and public safety implications.

Gregory Pinto of Homeland Security says the agencies are reviewing the matter for any national security, law enforcement and public safety issues.

Another Homeland Security official called the review routine.

Verizon spokeswoman Nancy Stark says the delay requested by the agencies is separate from that granted by the FCC at the request of the Vermont Public Interest Research Group.
