(Host) Some state workers could be laid off as the administration and Legislature close a $30 million shortfall in the state budget.

Governor Jim Douglas’ administration has proposed 24 million dollars in cuts from throughout state government.

Spending on transportation projects would be reduced by another four million dollars.

As many as 16 state workers could be laid off.

Legislative leaders say they’re glad the budget proposal protects human services programs that help people who are struggling in the slow economy.

The Joint Fiscal Committee did not vote on the proposals today. The committee will meet again on Wednesday and is likely to vote then.
