Rallying at the Statehouse, state workers say Gov. Jim Douglas’ plan to cut hundreds of jobs is bad news for them and for people who rely on state government services.

About 300 members of the Vermont State Employees Association chanted, waved signs and lobbied lawmakers at the rally Tuesday.

Douglas has announced plans to cut up to 660 jobs from the state payroll because the state is facing an estimated $200 million budget gap for the fiscal year starting July 1. Union leaders have offered concessions in hopes of avoiding layoffs, but no agreement has been reached.
