(Host) Vermonters who rely on the food stamp program known as 3 Squares Vermont have gotten a reprieve.

The U.S. Agriculture Department wants to reduce benefits for people who also qualify for fuel and utility assistance.

But the date for when benefits will be reduced has been postponed.

Renee Richardson of the Vermont Department for Children and Families says that means benefits won’t change during the difficult winter months.

(Richardson)  We would have had to have cut benefits at a very vulnerable time for Vermonters, and it really makes things a lot easier for those people who rely on us for food and shelter and other basic needs.

(Host) The lower benefits will now go into effect on April first.
