100 Vt. Guardsmen Leave For Afghan Mission

Another 100 members of the Vermont National Guard are set to leave the state on the first step of a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan.

Wednesday’s deployment will be followed by two additional deployments that will bring to 700 the number of soldiers due to leave Vermont within the week.

Hundreds of soldiers have already the state.

About 1,500 Vermont soldiers of the 86th Infantry Brigade Combat team will undergo training in Indiana before they arrive in Afghanistan.

The soldiers leaving Wednesday are based at armories in Waterbury and Vergennes.

Wednesday’s department ceremony at the Champlain Valley Fairgrounds is not open to the public.
