Senator
Patrick Leahy wants Congress to examine the domestic use of drones because he
says they pose a privacy risk to many Americans. The U.S. Senate Judiciary
Committee will begin a series of hearings on the issue this week.
The Vermont Senate will
debate a bill next week that would significantly change the way that renewable
energy projects are reviewed by the state. The bill would give towns much
more authority to ban projects.
The debate over putting a moratorium on wind energy projects
in Vermont and taken a turn. Now a bill in the Statehouse would instead give
towns a greater say in whether wind projects could be built within the town’s borders.
A tax on sugar sweetened beverages has run into
trouble in the House Ways and Means
committee. But the panel is seriously considering a plan to impose the state
sales tax on soda and candy.
The House Transportation Committee is set to approve
a plan that would restructure the way the state taxes gasoline. The new plan would help raise
revenue to draw down millions of federal transportation dollars.

For the most part, local
school budgets fared reasonably well on Town Meeting Day — 220 budgets were adopted and
16 were defeated. But local school
officials say budget pressures will continue to grow in the coming years.
