Who Is A Vermonter?

Native Vermonters are
famously proud of their roots here. But increasingly, the state is made up of
people who were born somewhere else – today, 49 percent of Vermonters are
transplants. We talk about Vermont
identity, and how the fabric of the state has changed with the influx of people
"from away," with Vince Bolduc, a professor of sociology at St. Michael’s
College, and Paul Searls, a professor of history at Lyndon State College.
We’ll also hear from Dan Lyons, a producer at Vermont Films in Brattleboro who is currently working on a film about exactly
this, entitled "From Away." We also look at when unity breaks down and the
terms "flatlander" and "woodchucks" make their way to the surface.

Also on the program, VPR’s
Ross Sneyd previews Super Tuesday in Vermont, and some of the big issues towns are focusing on on
Town Meeting Day.

And the 1924 Baldwin baby grand piano once owned by Margaret Truman was donated to the
Vermont Youth Orchestra Association two years ago. After extensive restoration
by Hilbert Pianos in Bristol, the piano makes its debut at a VYOA recital this
week. We get an advance performance by Director of Operations Arthur DeQuasie.
