From rolling the dice, to cranking a slot machine, to
betting at the racetrack…the allure of winning it big can entice even the
casual gambler.  But what are the odds
that gambling ever really pays off?  We
look at the mathematics of gambling with Vermont
author and Marlboro College Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, Joseph Mazur.  His new book, What’s Luck Got to Do with It? The History, Mathematics, and Psychology
of the Gambler’s Illusion
explores what drives people to risk it all and
looks at what the odds of winning really are.  Listen

Also on the program, environmental reporter Candace Page gives us a round-up of news from the bird world. We learn about the data coming back from geolocators on bobolinks and Bicknell’s thrushes, successful habitat restoration for peregrine falcons and grasslands birds, and the explanation behind the recent deaths of a few loons. Listen

And we continue our "Summer School" series with a lesson on how to milk a cow by hand. Jane Lindholm visits the Family Cow Farmstand in Hinesburg and gets instructions from farmer Lindsay Harris. Listen
