The Vermont State Housing Authority is going to stop adding names to its waiting list for Section 8 housing, a federally funded program for low-income housing assistance. Director Richard Williams says the waiting list for vouchers will reach 4,000 applicants by the end of this month, which means a wait time of about four years. We examine the factors that have contributed to this situation with Williams, and learn how state and community agencies are dealing with the problem. Listen

Also in the program, VPR News Editor Ross Sneyd updates us on how candidates took advantage of Labor Day weekend for campaigning, and the recount that’s underway in the Democratic governor’s race. Listen

And we begin a four-part series on the life of a deployed soldier by commentator Larry Doane. Doane is a captain in the Vermont National Guard, and has been keeping an audio journal for VPR while he’s been in Afghanistan. Listen
