The Scripps National Spelling Bee takes place next week with
young spellers coming together to vie for the title. Middlebury’s Ronan Howlett
will represent Vermont in the
competition. But sitting front and center throughout the Bee is UVM Classics
Professor Jacques Bailly. He was the 1980 spelling bee champion and has served
as the official pronouncer for the Bee since 2003.

Professor Bailly joins us to provide a behind-the-scenes
look at the National Spelling Bee and to let us know how he prepares for the
competition. He also discusses why he thinks spelling and the Classics still
have places in the digital age.

Also on the program, Matt Bushlow profiles Burlington
songwriter Ryan Power. Power’s music combines ‘80s-style crooning pop with
stark lyrics. He was recently chosen by stereogum.com as a "band to watch."

And we hear about NNA Tapes, a music label based in Burlington
that has been producing analog music since 2008. The label started by selling
unique cassette tapes with hand-painted labels and has branched out to vinyl
recordings.
