Vermont National Guard soldiers are ending their lengthy deployment in Afghanistan, arriving every few days in small groups from their demobilization site in Indiana. As these 1,500 soldiers return to civilian life, we talk with Adjutant General Michael Dubie about how their deployment went, the rates of casualties, and the support soldiers need to adjust to life outside of a combat zone. We welcome questions about the deployment and how soldiers are adapting to civilian life. And if you are soldier who’s just returned, tell us what you observed. Write to vermontedition@vpr.net

Also in the program, advocates for Vermont’s working landscape are meeting in Montpelier on Friday to discuss how to marshal state resources and public support for farming and forestry. We talk about a proposed plan for preserving Vermont’s working landscape and developing the industries it supports with Paul Costello, the executive director of the Vermont Council for Rural Development, which is convening the summit.
