Belief and faith take many forms in American religious and political life, from fundamentalist movements to new age spirituality. In his new book, "Sweet Heaven When I Die: Faith, Faithlessness, and the Country in Between," journalist Jeff Sharlet explores the spectrum of faith and what it means to be a believer. We explore these ideas with Sharlet, and discuss his work as a professor of creative non-fiction at Dartmouth College, Thursday on Vermont Edition.

Also in the program, Vermont’s fall tourism numbers are up over last year, despite worries that damage from Tropical Storm Irene would keep leaf-peepers away. Tourism Commissioner Megan Smith explains what’s behind the 11 percent increase in October’s rooms and meals tax revenue, the primary indicator of the state’s tourist industry.

And we hear an excerpt from the new novel by former VPR newsman Steve Delaney. Set in a fictionalized northern Vermont town, "Cooney" is a follow-up to Delaney’s first novel, "Kevin."
