Cities and Towns Face Budget Uncertainties

While state officials contemplate revenue shortfalls and major budget cuts, city and town officials are looking over their shoulders for the trickle-down effect. Property taxes, the mainstay of local budgets and the state education fund, are still holding relatively steady for now- but will the legislature be tempted to ‘raid’ the education surplus to cover shortfalls elsewhere? Steven Jeffrey, the Executive Director of the Vermont League of Cities and Towns, joins us as we consider these and other issues on the minds of municipal officials now preparing their budgets for Town Meeting.(Listen)
