Apples are a $20 million industry in Vermont, as well as an important
part of the state’s cultural heritage: apples are the official state fruit, and the
official state pie is also apple. But Vermont is losing apple acreage at an alarming rate. We talk with Ray Allen of the Allenholm Farm in South Hero and Steve Justis, an apple expert with the Vermont Department of Agriculture, about some of the
adaptations orchardists are making to stay in business.
Also on this apple harvest program, we visit with Ezekial Goodband of Dummerston. Goodband specializes in growing dozens of heirloom varieties of apples that are on the verge of being lost. And we hear part of essay from Dianne Goodband, about how the season makes her an
“apple harvest widow.”
