Fenway Park was built in less than six months over the winter of
1911/1912. And on April 9, 1912, it hosted its very first game. With this year
marking the 100th anniversary of Boston’s historic, beloved ballpark,
local baseball historian and writer Glenn Stout has a new book out: Fenway 1912: The Birth of a Ballpark, a
Championship Season, and Fenway’s Remarkable First Year. We’ll talk to
Stout about the birth Fenway, its first season – which the Red Sox celebrated
by winning the World Series – and how the park became the celebrated, hallowed
ground it is today.
Also on the program, we talk
to Kristen Kelliher, who at 17 years old (17 years, 4 months and 13 days, to be
exact), became the youngest woman to summit the highest peak in each of the 48
states in the continental U.S. Now, she has her sights set on the last two: Hawaii’s Mauna
Kea, and Alaska’s Mt. McKinley (also known as Denali),
which at 20,320 feet is the highest peak in North America.
