Governor Shumlin’s likely Republican challenger says the governor has advanced policies that will
raise the cost of living in Vermont. But other advocates say Shumlin should consider
raising taxes to fund threatened programs.
In his State of the State address, Governor Jim Douglas told lawmakers he wants to reduce the amount the state spends on schools. The proposal got a cool reception from Democrats
and from interest groups.
